She is a founding member of the Rock\, Gospel\, R&B Afrofuturistic group Labelle\, responsible for the No.1 hit ‘Lady Marmalade’ (“Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi C’est Soir?”)\, and she currently holds the post of Ambassador for Artistry in Music for Berklee College/Boston Conservatory. Her audio-visual productions\, inspired by Afrofuturism\, have been presented by The Metropolitan Museum\, Mass MOCA\, MOMA\, Park Avenue Armory\, Moog Fest\, Miami Basel\, London’s Serpentine Gallery\, and Somerset House. Her groundbreaking project\, The Dream Machine Experience\, a music-driven Mixed Reality installation combining AI\, AR\, and VR applications\, was presented at Lincoln Center\, NY\, in the Summer of 2024. Nona is passionate about Music\, Visual Art\, and Technology and continues to be a prolific artist. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJacqueline Coston\n\n\n\nJacqueline Coston is a violinist\, music educator\, composer\, and arts administrator based in Brooklyn\, NY. A proud descendant of Bedford-Stuyvesant natives and raised in Hempstead\, Long Island\, Jacqueline began studying piano and violin in childhood and has remained deeply connected to music ever since. \n\n\n\nShe has performed with the Harlem Symphony Orchestra\, Litha Symphony Orchestra\, Protestra\, and the New Conductors Orchestra\, appearing at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall and the Apollo Theater. Jacqueline holds both a BS and MA in Music Education\, with a concentration in string performance\, from Hofstra University\, where she specialized in urban multicultural education. \n\n\n\nDriven by a commitment to equity in classical music\, Jacqueline developed a multicultural string curriculum that addresses the erasure of composers of color in traditional music education. In 2019\, she founded the Youth Orchestra of Urban Towns and Hoods (Y.O.U.T.H.)\, offering group violin instruction and general music workshops throughout New York City and New Jersey\, centering composers of color and their contributions to the classical canon. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, Jacqueline works as a freelance performer and composer\, exploring the intersection of sound\, healing\, and storytelling. Her practice includes intuitive improvisation\, sound frequency healing\, and film scoring—an evolving journey through which she continues to expand the role of music in community and personal transformation. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaFrae Sci\n\n\n\nLaFrae Sci is an imaginationist\, educator\, composer\, and sound scientist (physics) with a career spanning 30 years and 40 countries. Her creative process embraces percussion\, DIY\, modular and hardware synths. As a composer\, she writes for theater\, film\, and large and extended jazz and classical orchestras. Bedrock to her artistry is the roots and the fruits of the blues from spirituals to Afro-diasporic futuristic soundscapes that explore time travel\, prayer\, meditation\, and the African American ecstatic tradition. Perhaps her proudest achievement yet\, Frae-Frae was appointed executive director of williemaerockcamp.org in 2020. She has spearheaded the organization’s expansion to a full suite of year-round\, STEM-informed programming – currently serving over 600 girls in NYC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEXI LESTER-WILLIAMS\n\n\n\nLEXI LESTER-WILLIAMS (Viola) is a passionate music educator\, violist\, and violinist. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and currently holds a residency at a thriving high school string ensemble program called the Inner City Youth Orchestra of New York. As a violist\, Lexi has performed with the Staten Island Philharmonic and brings her performance experience into the classroom to inspire the next generation of musicians. She has appeared onstage in productions such as Into the Woods and Gianni Schicchi\, where her love for storytelling and music is combined. Lexi is committed to making music accessible\, meaningful\, and empowering for all students\, both onstage and off. This production reflects her dedication to arts education and collaboration. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Orji\n\n\n\nMary Orji is a multifaceted artist: a visionary tenor saxophonist\, composer\, and poet. Her music is a unique blend of spiritual jazz\, hip-hop\, and neo-soul\, reflecting her Christian faith and Nigerian heritage. She leads The Mary Orji Visionaries Collective\, creating immersive and soul-stirring musical experiences.  \n\n\n\nMary Orji’s work is deeply rooted in her spiritual beliefs and cultural background\, drawing inspiration from artists like Alice Coltrane and Grover Washington Jr. Her music is described as a powerful expression of faith and identity\, incorporating poetry\, rhythm\, and improvisational freedom. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNia-Simone\n\n\n\nNia-Simone is a Composer and Cellist who graduated from Berklee College of Music in May 2023. She’s passionate about enhancing storytelling and creating immersive experiences through composition. Nia-Simone was recognized by the Berklee College of Music with the Women in Game Audio Award and the Berklee Thrive Scholarship\, and recognized by the Game Audio Diversity Alliance as a GSC award recipient. She has collaborated with prestigious institutions such as MIT\, MassArt\, USC\, and Harvard. Most recently\, Nia-Simone was a guest panelist at the Lincoln Center AI in Creativity Conversation and appeared on the Lincoln Center Artclass Podcast. She was featured in the Emerging Sounds Los Angeles Composer Debut and performed as a cellist alongside Nona Hendryx for the event “In Love and Struggle.” Nia-Simone is also the composer for the short film Mmanwu and served as the assistant project manager for The Dream Machine Experience. Additionally\, she is the composer and arranger for the Black Visionaries: Weeksville Then and Now AR Mural\, and Collaboration & Education Track Chair for AWE 2025 XR conference \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNoshi Norris \n\n\n\nNoshi Norris is a classically trained violinist-violist from Brooklyn currently studying film scoring at Berklee College of Music. Noshi blends his classical knowledge with hip hop and jazz influences to create a unique sound. He is currently part of a string/beatbox group performing across Boston. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShelley Nicole \n\n\n\nShelley Nicole is a transformational healer using the power of love and the energetic magic of music to shift the world. She is a songwriter\, vocalist\, composer\, actor and founder of Shelley Nicole’s blaKbüshe. Shelley Nicole has released three albums; her latest\, I Am American\, produced by Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid. Shelley Nicole has graced stages including Lincoln Center\, Carnegie Hall\, and The Apollo Theater. She is a 2024 recipient of the NYFA Women’s Fund Grant and a Watermill Center Fellowship for her “Tao of Abbey Lincoln” project and is also a co-collaborator on Nia O. Witherspoon’s “Priestess of Twerk: A Black Femme Star Temple + Wisdom School.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack Cline \n\n\n\nJack Cline (they/he) is a New York-based pianist\, music director\, and professional sweetie. He has recently returned to the city\, after working as a staff pianist at Boston University and the Boston Conservatory at Berklee\, and music directing regional and educational productions across Greater Boston. A classically-trained pianist\, Jack is a versatile artist fluent in the worlds of jazz\, funk\, pop\, rock\, and musical theatre. He is also a gifted improviser\, taking after the long-form works of Keith Jarrett. Their work is interested in the liberatory potential of music on a personal and collective level\, and the nurturing of loving relationships through music.

SUMMARY:Unearthing The Voices of Our Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging and deeply personal journey through history with Nicka Sewell Smith\, nationally recognized genealogist and storyteller\, as she leads a series of virtual African American genealogy workshops. This unique series will guide participants through the process of researching their family histories\, with a special emphasis on centering Black voices\, narratives\, and ancestral legacies. \n\n\n\nThrough the lens of genealogy\, participants will learn to navigate historical records\, oral traditions\, and modern tools like DNA testing. As Nicka beautifully demonstrates\, genealogical research combined with oral histories helps us develop a deep understanding of our past\, present\, and can help us navigate our future. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re just beginning or continuing your journey\, this series offers the inspiration and knowledge to dig deeper into your roots—and strengthen the stories that shape us all. \n\n\n\nPresented by Weeksville and in collaboration with Robyne Walker Murphy\, an arts and cultural strategist and family researcher committed to uplifting Black heritage\, these workshops promise to be both educational and empowering. \n\n\n\nAll workshops are free and will take place on Zoom. You must register for each workshop individually. \n\n\n\nSESSION SCHEDULE (7pm EST on Zoom): \n\n\n\nWednesday\, July 23rd: Introduction to DNA and Genealogy \n\n\n\nGenetic genealogy truly bears fruit if multiple family members on multiple lines of the family have tested. Learn the ins and outs of the type of tests\, what to expect when you get results\, and how to create and manage a project for your family while being mindful of privacy and sensitive issues that may arise. \n\n\n\nFACILITATOR BIOGRAPHY: \n\n\n\nNicka Smith is a host\, consultant\, and documentarian with more than 20 years of experience as a genealogist. She has extensive experience in researching the enslaved and their communities and is a valued expert in genealogy research along the Mississippi Delta. \n\n\n\nNicka has diverse and varied experience in media with a background in audio\, video\, and written communications. She’s appeared on TODAY Show\, CNN\, MSNBC\, was featured on an Emmy winning episode of the series Who Do You Think You Are\, and has been interviewed by Oakland Tribune\, The Undefeated\, National Geographic\, and TIME. She is the host of BlackProGen LIVE\, an innovative web show with more than 130 episodes focused on people of color genealogy and family history. \n\n\n\nShe is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma\, a member of two lineage societies (Sons and Daughters of the Middle Passage (SDUSMP) and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR))\, and a past board member of the California Genealogical Society (CGS) and the African American Genealogical Society of Northern California (AAGSNC). Nicka served as the chair of the Outreach and Education Committee for AAGSNC\, and she is the former project manager for the Alameda County\, CA Youth Ancestral Project where more than 325 youth were taught the value of family history. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, Nicka is the family historian and lead researcher for the Atlas family of Lake Providence\, East Carroll\, Louisiana\, and guides and coaches an active group of family historians at the Who is Nicka Smith Patreon community.

DESCRIPTION:sessions is a space for deep listening\, curated by Lovie of summer school radio. \n\n\n\nsessions turns our performance space to an experiential room for sound\, featuring curated music and live performance tailored for deep listening\, contemplation\, grooving\, and feeling. session (5) will feature a set from Lovie and a live performance by A Space for Sound\, powered by KARLALA sound system. \n\n\n\nThis will be a listening room: \n\n\n\nWhen the session begins\, attendees will be asked to refrain from talking\, and the space will be phone and photo free. This is a seated space\, and you are welcome to bring blankets or pillows if you would like to get comfortable. \n\n\n\nTea and refreshments will be served between 6 and 7 pm\, with the listening session beginning at 7.  \n\n\n\nLovie (summer school radio) – broadcasting from The Lot Radio\, summer school radio started as a pandemic project for Lovie. Now four years old\, the show boasts a community of listeners that tune in weekly to hear her discoveries\, for a sonic range that spans ambient\, spoken word\, spiritual jazz\, soul\, alternative R&B\, and more. \n\n\n\nIn 2024\, summer school radio expanded to in person deep listening sessions at Weeksville Heritage Center in Crown Heights\, Brooklyn. The performance space at Weeksville becomes an experiential room for sound\, with Lovie’s curation joined alongside guests such as Alex Rita (Calm Roots)\, muva of Earth\, and Laraaji. \n\n\n\nA Space for Sound — ‘A Space for Sound’ is the moniker of Rena Anakwe\, a Nigerian-Canadian-American interdisciplinary artist\, performer\, poet and healer that uses sound\, visuals and scent in her work to explore where and how traditional healing practices\, spirituality and performance can connect and fracture. Her deeper inquiry is how reconnecting to nature can help us to understand and mend these fractures; not only for ourselves but in relation to one another. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE

DESCRIPTION:What can we learn from listening to our queer Black elders? \n\n\n\nJoin us at Weeksville Heritage Center for Floating Freely: Queer Archives & Media from the Elders Project\, a half-day celebration of Black and queer history including a film screening\, workshops\, music\, food trucks\, and a panel exploring the questions of freedom\, inheritance\, and belonging. \n\n\n\nFloating Freely is inspired by interviews conducted by J Wortham for the Baldwin-Emerson Elders Project\, which captured 230+ oral histories with minoritized elders across America. Wortham’s collection dives into queer waterfront histories in and around New York City. The Elders Project was created by award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson and produced in partnership with Incite Institute. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public\, and will coincide with Weeksville Green Farmers & Community Market\, our annual farmer’s market focusing on Black foodways\, urban growing\, diasporic memory\, and community built through food at every stage. \n\n\n\nEVENT SCHEDULE \n\n\n\n12pm \n\n\n\nLive art performance by Osadolor alongside a screening of a_blurred_fluxx_00.avi \n\n\n\n1:25pm – 2:25pm \n\n\n\nChoose your own path with a workshop: \n\n\n\n\nBlack Poetry and The Wish: Imagining Otherwise and its Otherworlds (Led by Michelle Alexander)- Black poetry that deploys\, incites\, drifts into\, or stirs up wish-making or its antithetical bearing\, dread\, offers us a subtle mode of critical engagement and radical reimagining of the time when the wish finds language. Of what could be. Of what can be. We will ask and look toward: Who or what can figure as the realization of a wish? How is wish concerned with the future? “Black Poetry and The Wish: Imagining Otherwise and its Otherworlds” will utilize listening\, reading\, and generative exercises to delve into the potential of the wish. Bring your creativity to writing the wish.\n\n\n\nMixing and Remixing: The Poetics of Collaging the Archive (Led by Kenia Hale)- Throughout this intergenerational hands-on session\, we’ll work together to make collages and poems using materials from the Elders Project\, collectively activating the archive and exploring the ways that our communities mix and remix our archival methods\, creating intergenerational conversation and pass through. Think a quilting b – but with collaging!\n\n\n\nReunion in Ink: A Letter Writing Workshop (Led by Nyssa Chow)- This isn’t just about putting pen to paper; it’s about reclaiming parts of yourself\, honoring those who walk with you\, and acknowledging the wisdom you carry. Borrowing from oral history\, a listening practice that attends to the subtle ways that we make meaning with and alongside our worlds\, we will engage an approach that invites us to listen for our embodied knowledge\, both inherited and born. What do you feel a duty to remember? Who needs to hold this knowledge? What memories do you belong to\, and what belongs to you? Who holds an imagination for your dignity? Through guided prompts and shared reflection\, we’ll treat re-membering as medicine\, recognizing the power of gathering and languaging. What ways of seeing\, knowing\, and relating are worlded in you? This generative writing practice invites us to slow down\, listen\, and allow that awareness to carry us a distance\, and notice where we go. Who will you speak to? She is an artist of multiple mediums like writing\, media\, photography\, and is interested in socially relevant and personal themes such as being the grandchild of immigrants\, LGBTQ+ issues & gender identification. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEllery Washington  \n\n\n\nEllery Washington is a New York-based writer from Albuquerque\, NM\, whose first novel\, Buffalo\, fall 2022\, returns him to his Southwestern roots. His fiction and essays have appeared in The New York Times\, Ploughshares\, State by State ‘A Panoramic Portrait of America\,’ and Geography of Rage ‘Remembering the Los Angeles Riots’. His screen work includes projects with Disney\, Pixar\, Tristar\, and Paramount Pictures. He’s currently an Associate Professor of Writing at the Pratt Institute. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCheryl Boyce Taylor  \n\n\n\nCheryl Boyce-Taylor is an immigrant poet\, teaching artist\, and curator. Born in Trinidad and raised in Queens\, New York\, she is the author of seven collections of poetry. Her most recent\, The Limitless Heart: New and Selected Poems (1997-2022.)\, published by Haymarket Books\, in 2023 was the winner of  the 2024 Firecracker Award in Poetry. \n\n\n\nIn addition to her poetry collections\, in 2021 Cheryl’s verse memoir\, Mama Phife Represents\, was published\, winning The Publishing Triangle’s Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry for that year.  It is about her son\, Malik Taylor\, aka Hip Hop Legend\, Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest. In 2022 her collection of poetry\, We Are Not Wearing Helmets\, published by TriQuarterly Books/Northwestern University Press\, was nominated for the 2022 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in Poetry. \n\n\n\nBoyce-Taylor has been awarded The Barnes & Nobel Writers for Writers Award and was a finalist for The Paterson Poetry Prize. Her work has appeared in Rolling Stone Magazine\, Poetry\, Prairie Schooner\, The New York Times Book Review\, and The Chicago Review of Books. She earned an MFA in poetry from Stonecoast/The University of Southern Maine and a Masters in Social Work from Fordham University. Cheryl’s works are archived at The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOsadolor \n\n\n\nOsadolor Osawemwenze is a New York-based director\, visual maker\, creative researcher\, and sound designer born and raised in Dallas\, Texas. He graduated from Stanford University with an academic focus on the Black Diaspora\, pop culture\, Blackqueerness\, media\, art\, and aesthetics. As a Nigerian American\, moments of discovery\, reflection\, and awareness of their positioning in this world influence her nostalgic Lo-Fi and D-I-Y videos and experimental sonic design. In his globally charting podcast\, “a coming of age\, but irl\,” Osadolor blurs introspection and conversation through uniquely crafted sonic experiences. Osadolor’s latest experimental documentary\,  a_blurred_fluxx_00.avi\, which delves into the nuance of today’s Black queer youth\, was a Best Documentary (International Short Film) finalist at the 2024 London Breeze Film Festival and has since been screened in various film festivals and theatres. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEMLINES \n\n\n\nSTEMLINES is the endless quest of Nnenna Udumah to explore the limitless world of music with a focus on electronic production and performance. Her music is marked by hypnotic drums\, melodic R&B-inspired vocals\, and expansive storytelling that allows her to elude the confines of genre. Through her music\, she investigates the vast emotional landscape of human existence while feeding her insatiable desire for experimentation and discovery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKambaba Jasper \n\n\n\nAkin to the greatest of poets\, Kambaba Jasper is an examiner of the uncanny: that which opens amidst and ruptures our sense of the mundane. Beneath the magnifying glass of experimental electronic music\, the Fayetteville North Carolina musician holds\, distends\, and recaptures the profoundly strange and spiritual content of folk\, R&B\, and gospel music. The result is a sound that pierces like a spicule of ice: startling the senses upon entry and melting\, subsumed by organs\, soon after. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nViper \n\n\n\nViper is a boundary-blurring artist whose sets live at the crossroads of sensuality and sound. Blending afro house\, deep house\, alternative R&B\, spoken word\, and cinematic scoring\, Viper curates’ immersive sonic journeys that move the body and stir the soul. Whether crafting warm\, meditative soundscapes with original compositions or igniting the dancefloor with an exhilarating DJ set\, Viper’s performances are deeply intentional—designed to seduce\, soothe\, and awaken. With a signature moody style and a pulse on the emotional undercurrent of every track\, Viper transforms each showcase into a space for connection\, feeling\, and release. \n\n\n\nWORKSHOP FACILITATORS  \n\n\n\nMichelle Alexander \n\n\n\nMichelle Alexander is an American-Trinidadian poet\, creative nonfiction writer\, and interdisciplinary practitioner. She graduated from New York University Gallatin School of Individualized Study\, receiving the Herbert Rubin Prize in Poetry\, and holds an MFA from Columbia College Chicago\, where she was a Nathan Breitling Poetry Fellow. Her poetry collection\, A Stone’s Throw from C r a y\,  is forthcoming from New American Press as the recipient of the New American Prize (Poetry). Among her publications are works that have appeared or are forthcoming in the journals Oxford Poetry\, Third Coast\, Epiphany\, and Puerto del Sol. She has served as a poet in residence for the Chicago Poetry Center and as a Visiting Teaching Artist for the Poetry Foundation’s “Forms and Features” series. She is an Interdisciplinary Humanities Instructor at the Odyssey Project. She is the recipient of the Furious Flower Poetry Prize 2024 and is a co-founder + Director of Interdisciplinary Arts at Unwoven Literary & Arts Magazine. \n\n\n\nKenia Hale \n\n\n\nKenia Hale (she/her/ella) is a writer\, researcher\, and collage artist from Cleveland\, Ohio. A granddaughter of the Great Migration\, Kenia studied Computer Science and Architecture at Yale University and produced research about liberatory technologies\, digital marronage\, and critical technology ecologies at the Princeton University Ida B. Wells Data Justice Lab. Currently\, Kenia works as Public Projects Coordinator for the Movements Against Mass Incarceration Project at the Columbia University Incite Institute. Kenia has taught speculative fiction writing at The Octavia Project and The School of Poetic Computation\, and is a founding editor of Porch Water Press (porchwaterpress.com). Kenia is passionate about creating accessible public knowledge and honoring and preserving the myriad ways of knowing that sustain her community and others. \n\n\n\nNyssa Chow  \n\n\n\nThis workshop will be facilitated by Nyssa Chow\, oral historian\, writer\, and artist. She is the Interim Director of the Oral History Masters Program at Columbia University\, is a Visiting Scholar of experimental pedagogies at Princeton University\, and co-founded the DocX Fellowship\, a liberatory oasis for black and brown documentary artists at Duke University. Her multimedia project\, The Story of Her Skin\, received the PEN America Foundation’s Jean Stein Award for literary oral history. Trace: A Memorial\, a permanent monument in the CUNY School of Public Health\, honors essential workers lost to COVID-19 and earned special recognition from the U.S. Congress and the New York State Senate. Chow lectures and facilitates workshops widely on oral history as “spontaneous literature\,” a relational approach that positions oral history as a decolonial practice in intimate space.About the Elders Project Established by award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson\, the Baldwin-Emerson Elders Project captures and celebrates untold and underrepresented stories of activists\, storytellers\, and community builders who have witnessed and shaped great change in American public life. We will be issuing wristbands for guests ages 21 and over for designated areas to consume alcoholic beverages purchased from our vendors. \n\n\n\nIs smoking allowed? \n\n\n\nSmoking\, vaping\, and use of e-cigarettes are prohibited on the grounds of Weeksville to prevent a fire and to further protect the historic grounds. \n\n\n\nAre pets allowed? \n\n\n\nTo help preserve our historic grounds\, pets are not allowed on the Weeksville campus during the festival. We dance.  \n\n\n\nJoin us on Sunday\, June 1 from 1pm – 6pm as we celebrate Pinkster\, a 17th-century festival rooted in the resilience\, resistance\, and cultural expression of enslaved Africans in early New York. \n\n\n\nOriginally a Dutch observance of Pentecost brought to the region during colonization\, Pinkster was transformed by generations of Africans and African-Americans into a spirited celebration of identity\, culture\, and survival.  \n\n\n\nFor enslaved peoples—who had few chances to rest or gather—Pinkster offered this rare moment. Over several days\, it became a time to celebrate\, resist bondage\, and nurture community through music\, dance\, food\, religious rituals\, and ancestral traditions. And so today we continue to honor Pinkster as a living embodiment of the strength and ingenuity of New York’s enslaved peoples\, and their enduring impact on our cultural heritage.  \n\n\n\nJoin us at Weeksville to experience Pinkster’s sights\, sounds\, and flavors through through live music\, traditional dance\, games\, workshops\, art-making\, and delicious food that reflects Black foodways and folkways. DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 23rd\, from 6-9 pm\, Weeksville Heritage Center is honored to present Black Visionaries: Visionary Frequencies of Technology\, Creativity\, and Black Futures\, a special activation of our commissioned augmented reality mural Black Visionaries by Nona Hendryx and Dream Machine Studio.   \n\n\n\nThe legendary Nona Hendryx will host the evening\, featuring a dynamic lineup of guests and collaborators\, including Craig Harris\, LaFrae Sci\, Carl Hancock Rux\, For The People\, Maya Georgieva\, and Sam Mejias. She is a founding member of the Rock\, Gospel\, R&B Afrofuturistic group Labelle\, responsible for the No.1 hit ‘Lady Marmalade’ (“Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi C’est Soir?”)\, and she currently holds the post of Ambassador for Artistry in Music for Berklee College/Boston Conservatory. Her audio-visual productions\, inspired by Afrofuturism\, have been presented by The Metropolitan Museum\, Mass MOCA\, MOMA\, Park Avenue Armory\, Moog Fest\, Miami Basel\, London’s Serpentine Gallery\, and Somerset House. Her groundbreaking project\, The Dream Machine Experience\, a music-driven Mixed Reality installation combining AI\, AR\, and VR applications\, was presented at Lincoln Center\, NY\, in the Summer of 2024. Nona is passionate about Music\, Visual Art\, and Technology and continues to be a prolific artist. \n\n\n\nCraig Harris (Trombonist and Didgeridoo)  \n\n\n\nCraig Harris is a trombonist\, composer\, and bandleader whose visionary sound has shaped the course of creative music. Launching his career alongside Sun Ra\, Harris has since led ensembles like Nation of Imagination and Harlem Nightsongs\, while contributing to an extensive discography. His original works—including God’s Trombones\, Souls Within the Veil\, TriHarlenium\, Brown Butterfly\, and BREATHE—use music as a force for cultural memory and social commentary. An NAACP Image Award nominee and co-composer of the Oscar-winning Judas and the Black Messiah score\, Harris continues to create boundary-pushing work. His recent projects include FESTAC ’77 and Harlem Sonic Communiversity\, which bring his compositions directly to the communities that inspire them. A recipient of numerous honors\, including the Jazz Journalists Association’s Jazz Hero award\, Harris remains a vital advocate for art as public service. His latest recording\, Managing the Mask\, was released in 2022. \n\n\n\nLaFrae Sci (Percussionist and Technologist) \n\n\n\n LaFrae Sci is an imaginationist\, educator\, composer\, and sound scientist (physics) with a career spanning 30 years and 40 countries. Her creative process embraces percussion\, DIY\, modular and hardware synths. As a composer\, she writes for theater\, film\, and large and extended jazz and classical orchestras. Bedrock to her artistry is the roots and the fruits of the blues from spirituals to Afro-diasporic futuristic soundscapes that explore time travel\, prayer\, meditation\, and the African American ecstatic tradition. Perhaps her proudest achievement yet\, Frae-Frae was appointed executive director of williemaerockcamp.org in 2020. She has spearheaded the organization’s expansion to a full suite of year-round\, STEM-informed programming – currently serving over 600 girls in NYC. \n\n\n\nCarl H. Rux (Spoken Word Artists and Poet)   \n\n\n\nCarl Hancock Rux is a multidisciplinary artist and author of several books including the Village Voice Literary Prize-winning collection of poetry\, Pagan Operetta; the novel\, Asphalt; and the Obie Award-winning play\, Talk. His music has been released internationally on several labels including Sony/550\, Thirsty Ear\, and Giant Step. Mr. Rux is also co-Artistic Director of Mabou Mines and an artist in residence at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Doris Duke Award for New Works\, the Doris Duke Charitable Fund\, the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Prize\, the Bessie Award \, the Alpert Award in the Arts\, and a Global Change Maker award by WeMakeChange.Org. Mr. Rux’s archives are housed at the Billy Rose Theater Division of the New York Public Library\, the Archives of American Art\, Smithsonian Institution as well as the Film and Video/Theater and Dance Library of the California Institute of the Arts. \n\n\n\nFor The People (Band)   \n\n\n\nBorn on the East Coast\, raised in the West. Growing up in LA\, Kobie enjoyed music from all over the city as he developed as a young saxophone player. Throughout his development he played often with musicians from the Leimert Park community. There\, he received private lessons from Ricky Washington and had the honor of knowing legends like Reggie Andrews\, who were responsible for shaping popular jazz artists like Kamasi Washington and Terrace Martin. A recent graduate from The New School\, Kobie is now making waves as one of the new rising artists from LA. He recently finished his debut EP “For The People” followed by a nearly sold out concert at the renowned venue\, Public Records. \n\n\n\nMaya Georgieva – Senior Direction Innovation Center\, XR AI\, and Quantum Labs.  \n\n\n\nMaya Georgieva is a futurist\, immersive storyteller\, and global thought leader shaping the future of learning and creativity. She is the founding Senior Director of the Innovation Center and XR\, AI\, and Quantum Labs at The New School\, where she leads cutting-edge initiatives at the intersection of technology\, design\, and education. At Parsons School of Design\, she teaches the largest immersive storytelling course in the U.S.\, guiding students in crafting speculative worlds through spatial computing and generative AI. Maya’s work blends narrative design with emerging tech to explore new modes of storytelling and provoke meaningful dialogue. Her projects have been featured at SXSW\, UNESCO\, SIGGRAPH\, iLRN\, and MIT. A sought-after speaker and collaborator\, she works with artists\, designers\, and technologists to expand the possibilities of multisensory storytelling across academia and industry. \n\n\n\nSam Mejias – Dean of the School of Art\, Media and Technology\, and Asso.  \n\n\n\nProfessor of Social Justice and Community Engagement. A multi-instrumentalist\, sound designer and multimedia producer\, Sam Mejias (he/him) is Associate Professor of Social Justice and Community Engagement in the School of Design Strategies\, and a Visiting Fellow at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Working primarily as an ethnographer\, Sam’s research explores the cultural politics of social justice and civic engagement in the US\, Europe and the Middle East. SUMMARY: [IF...] Iterative Fictions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with artist Eto Otitigbe as he presents [IF…] (Iterative Fictions)\, a creative research project that draws on materials from the Weeksville Heritage Center archives to imagine stories of Black life\, past and future. “Iterative fiction” refers to a narrative process that shifts and expands over time\, inviting multiple perspectives. Through this approach\, [IF…] traces\, recreates\, and reactivates fragmented artifacts for future use. \n\n\n\nThis performance blends sculpture\, sound\, and visual media to reimagine the Black Archive and open new pathways for understanding history. \n\n\n\nOtitigbe is joined by collaborators Zane Rodulfo and Dakota Ray. Rodulfo composed an original soundscape using interviews from the Weeksville Lost Jazz Shrines of Brooklyn\, a project developed by Weeksville’s former research team that highlights Central Brooklyn’s jazz legacy. Ray contributes visual projections that combine vintage cartoons\, blaxploitation films\, and images from the Golden Legacy illustrated history series\, creating a layered and visually striking atmosphere. \n\n\n\nFeatured Artists and Collaborators \n\n\n\nEto Otitigbe is a polymedia artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture\, public art\, performance\, installation\, and community engagement. His public works include installations at Socrates Sculpture Park and Randall’s Island Park\, as well as a key role on the design team for the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at UVA. He is an Associate Professor of Sculpture at Brooklyn College and holds degrees from MIT\, Stanford\, and the University of Plymouth. He is also the founder of eo Studio\, a 2023 Creative Capital Awardee focused on community-driven public art \n\n\n\nZane Rodulfo is a Trinidadian drummer and composer based in New York City. Trained in both Jazz Performance and Ethnomusicology at Oberlin Conservatory\, he holds a graduate degree in Jazz Studies from NYU. Rodulfo has performed at venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Blue Note and has opened for legends such as Stevie Wonder and Roy Ayers. \n\n\n\nHis work spans performance\, composition\, and sound installation\, with commissions from the Guggenheim Museum\, Whitney Museum\, Brooklyn Arts Council\, and more. His piece Around the Circle was featured in the Guggenheim’s Vasily Kandinsky exhibition (2021–2022) alongside his sound sculpture Abandoned Orchestra. Dakota Ray is a Brooklyn-based multimedia artist who learned very early that she could use art as a way of connection and expression. Through the use of comic art\, sculpture\, digital art\, and drawing\, many of her works center around evoking feelings of nostalgia\, particularly around food. Dakota earned an A.A.S. (Honors) in Art Foundations-Studio Art with a concentration in Sculpture from CUNY BMCC in Spring 2023 and is currently a Senior at CUNY Brooklyn College\, on track to receive a BA in Art\, with a minor in Theater Production in May 2025. Growing up between the East Coast and the Middle East\, Kia was immersed in diverse cultural and devotional practices from an early age. DESCRIPTION:Through Fabric & Frame is the second installment in our Women’s History Month series\, Legacy is a Living Force. Join us Saturday\, March 22nd\, between 11 am and 6 pm for a daylong study of Black feminist thought\, engaging the works of Faith Ringgold and Lorraine O’Grady.  \n\n\n\nThrough storytelling\, quilting\, photography\, and collective study\, we hope to learn how to incorporate their legacies into our own creative practices. \n\n\n\nThe Day’s Offerings Include: \n\n\n\n11 AM – 12 PM  \n\n\n\nStorytime: Tar Beach – A reading of Faith Ringgold’s beloved children’s book\, inviting reflections on dreams\, memory\, and freedom. She received her BFA in Photography and Related Media at The Fashion Institute of Technology. She is redefining traditional family structures through contemporary community kinship\, particularly amongst queer youth and the sisterhood of marginalized women and girls. Through her early work with local youth organizations throughout the five boroughs\, she’s incorporated image-making to envision a world of inclusion and power.  \n\n\n\nAbout Donnette and Kimberly Williams \n\n\n\nDonnette A. Williams has lived a life in service to her community through her practice of the arts\, which started at the age of four. As a holistic and inclusive occupational therapy professional\, she has been able to combine both passions to curate diasporic galleries and cultural forums for the whole person via platforms of dance\, culinary demonstrations\, book clubs\, and more. She has also served for nearly twenty years in her church’s Black History Ministry\, of which she is currently the Co-Director. \n\n\n\nKimberly Denise Williams believes that every community deserves the information and resources needed to make the best decisions\, and this has been a guiding mission in both her professional and vocational activities. A native Brooklynite\, she has worked to amplify her community and has been featured in national publications like Vibe and local Brooklyn outlets like Voices of Lefferts\, where she currently volunteers on the oral history project. Kimberly also serves on the advisory board of Little Caribbean. She can be found chasing whimsy\, grace\, and justice when she is not running around Prospect Park. \n\n\n\nThis event is two of three in our month-long dedication to the luminaries who transitioned this past year\, including Faith Ringgold\, Lorraine O’Grady\, and Judith Jamison. She is also a Set Decorator/Dresser for TV and Film and the Creator/Director of The Free Black Women’s Library a Black Feminist social art project\, literary hub\, reading room and community carespace located in Bed-Stuy\, Brooklyn which features a collection of 5000 books written by Black women and Black nonbinary folks\, a period pantry\, free store\, weekly book swap\, backyard garden\, and a wide array of free public programs and creative workshops. Through her work she offers new and critical narratives on the constructs of race\, gender\, beauty\, and sanity. DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion: Growing Up Rikers\, Then and Now \n\n\n\nOn February 19th\, we will be hosting an intergenerational panel discussion on the impact of Rikers Island on young people in New York City. \n\n\n\nThe evening will begin with a panel featuring individuals who have firsthand experience with Rikers and the NYC legal system as adolescents and young adults\, sharing their journeys and perspectives. Following this\, a panel of advocates and service providers will discuss the current landscape of programs designed to support at-risk and system-involved youth. \n\n\n\nTo conclude\, all panelists will come together for a Q&A session\, encouraging audience participation in a dynamic discussion\, followed by a youth performance to close the evening. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect and explore pathways to liberation. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHelen “Skip” Skipper \n\n\n\nHelen Skipper\, or Skip as she prefers to be called\, has been working in peer support since her final release from years of multiple incarcerations and systems involvement in 2007. She is the Executive Director of the NYC Justice Peer Initiative\, a Beyond the Bars 20-21′ Fellow\, and an honors graduate of St. Francis College. Skip is pursuing a Master of Arts and moving toward a PhD in Criminology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Her criminology work includes acceptance into the American Society of Criminology\, where she has presented her original scholarship at their annual meeting for the last 2 years. \n\n\n\nShe is also a board member and participant of College and Community Fellowship\, which works with justice-involved women through community support and access to higher education. Skip has been a part of the Rikers Public Memory Project community since 2023\, where she has contributed an oral history interview\, served as a Directly Impacted Design Advisor for RPMP’s Mobile Exhibit\, and most recently been accepted to the inaugural Rikers Narrative Change Community Fellowship\, where she will produce a documentary theater project. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIsaac Scott \n\n\n\nIsaac I. Scott is a multidisciplinary visual artist who has been recognized with multiple awards for his creative endeavors. Isaac was ordained in 2018 at God’s Touch Healing Ministry\, where he served with dedication for three years as the Associate Pastor. Currently\, Isaac is actively engaged in ministry within the African Methodist Episcopal Church\, holding a Certificate of License to Preach\, where he integrates faith\, art\, and social justice. Isaac Scott is an experienced community organizer\, currently serving as the Director of Community Initiatives at Another Choice Youth and Family Outreach Inc. and the Chairperson for the Human Services Committee at Manhattan Community Board 11. His leadership as President of the Justice Arts Coalition and his ongoing service on the National Religious Campaign Against Torture’s Prison Program Advisory Council highlight his deep understanding of the intricacies of both the prison and reentry systems \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLuz Hernandez \n\n\n\nLuz Hernandez\, also known as Luz Tha Goddess or “Sunshine\,” is a passionate activist\, advocate\, artist\, and photographer who was born in Queens and raised in the South Bronx and is dedicated to empowering marginalized communities. Drawing from her own transformative experiences of incarceration and systemic injustice\, Luz’s journey is a testament to the power of art and advocacy in breaking toxic cycles and fostering healing. \n\n\n\nShe is currently publishing A Fractured Menace\, a powerful poetry collection that delves deep into her incarceration\, exploring harrowing themes of gang violence\, gun violence\, human trafficking\, child abuse\, sexual abuse\, and domestic violence. Through her evocative words\, Luz invites readers into her world\, revealing the complexities of survival and resilience. \n\n\n\nAs an intern at Justice Ambassadors at Columbia University\, she is actively crafting policy proposals with elected officials\, aiming to reshape the narratives surrounding justice-involved individuals. Luz is also a dynamic presence in her community\, voluntarily hosting open mics at Youth Justice Network\, where she collaborates with organizations like Fortune Society\, Reform\, and others to advocate for criminal justice reform. These events serve as vital safe spaces for artists to express themselves and heal from the trauma of incarceration and prior life experiences. \n\n\n\nHer photography project\, Meet Me at the Crossroads\, confronts uncomfortable truths and challenges societal labels\, showcasing the human stories behind high-profile and low-profile cases. This impactful work will be displayed at the renowned Benrubi Art Gallery\, offering a visual narrative that underscores the strength and resilience of those who have been justice-impacted. \n\n\n\nThrough her multifaceted work\, Luz hopes to battle parole justice\, end mass incarceration\, and support individuals with high-profile cases in successfully reentering society. By garnering support for reentry groups\, destigmatizing individuals with high-profile charges\, and helping them reunify with their families and meet their basic needs\, she aims to prevent further incarceration and foster a sense of belonging. \n\n\n\nWith a heart dedicated to spreading love and positivity\, Luz strives to change the perspectives of those in authority within the criminal justice system while uplifting others who have faced similar challenges. Her son is the driving force behind her relentless advocacy; her battle to reclaim him inspires her to help everyone she can. Luz makes it a priority to infuse every space she enters with warmth and compassion\, ensuring she puts a smile on everyone’s face. She makes sure everyone knows that vulnerability is strength. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNaquasia Jones \n\n\n\nNaquasia Pollard is an advocate\, activist and direct service provider. She has been deeply involved in movements for social justice drawing upon her own experience – 15 years of incarceration in a Women’s Correctional Facility at the age of 19 and being pregnant on Rikers Island (Rosie M. Singer). Upon her release in October 2017 she went to work at the Ladies of Hope Ministries where she utilized her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Minor in Psychology\, earned in prison\, to support women impacted by incarceration. Her personal and professional goals are connected to her own experiences with systems that were supposed to support her but instead have failed her. As a result\, Naquasia is deeply committed to supporting women and young girls impacted by systemic failures. \n\n\n\nWhile working at the Ladies of Hope Ministries\, Naquasia became more involved in advocacy and direct services for women and young girls\, using a trauma-centered approach to support them in their journey towards healing and restoration. In 2018\, Naquasia founded Pure Legacee Inc.\, an organization providing a healing haven for young girls to break generational barriers and develop community leaders. She is also a part of the Beyond Rosies campaign and Herstories documentary. Naquasia is involved in the Probation and Parole Reform Project with Columbia University. In 2021\, she was part of the FACES Speakers Bureau to lift the voices of formerly incarcerated people as agents of change. Naquasia is an alumnus of Women Influencing Systems and History through Community College Fellowship to train women to be organizers and advocate against mass incarceration. \n\n\n\nShe is a Reform Alliance Ambassador for New York and has been a certified Credible Messenger since 2019 through The New School\, where she currently teaches and prepares other Credible Messengers in New York City. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRSVP here

The moment we choose to love\, we begin to move toward freedom\, to act in ways that liberate ourselves and others.” – bell hooks Outlaw Culture: Resisting Representations\, 1994 \n\n\n\nCatalytic\, expansive\, steadfast\, liberatory—these words come to mind as we reflect on bell hooks’s teachings about the essence of love. Her work reminds us that love is not passive\, nor is it confined to romantic fantasy. Instead\, love is a deliberate and conscientious act that nurtures the well-being of oneself and others\, serving as an initial step toward collective freedom. \n\n\n\nThis Valentine’s Day\, we invite you to join us in reimagining the holiday as Liberatory Love Day. On February 14th\, poetess Nicole Alexander will lead us in a revelatory workshop where we’ll explore the depths of love and liberation. Together\, we’ll craft valentines of poetry for ourselves and others\, inspired by Nicole’s practice of immortalizing the hearts of strangers through her written word.  \n\n\n\nDrop in anytime between 12:00 and 6:00 p.m.\, and as you write\, take a moment to explore our open-source library\, featuring a curated collection of works on radical love. At 2:00 p.m.\, join us for a special walk-through in our gallery of Torture Island: Past\, Present\, Future\, our new exhibition curated by the Rikers Public Memory Project. \n\n\n\nAbout Nicole Alexander \n\n\n\nNicole Alexander is a poetess and educator based in NYC. She graduated from Syracuse University in 2020\, earning a BA in English and textual studies with a concentration in creative writing. During the warmer months\, Nicole writes personalized poems for strangers in parks in NYC. In 2024\, she self-published her debut collection of poems: Why I Love Dreaming. \n\n\n\nAbout Torture Island  \n\n\n\nTorture Island: Past\, Present\, Future is an exhibition showcasing works from the Rikers Public Memory Project’s ongoing initiative with Freedom Agenda\, Create Forward\, and the Humanities Action Lab. The exhibition features creative works by their 2024 Narrative Change Community Fellows alongside historical context and personal stories about Rikers Island\, the active New York City jail complex located in the East River. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here
